Our Heroic Vision
Whether you’re taking your first steps in a new business, or looking to expand, our practice represents everyday people, people like you, who live and work, and yes walk their dogs, in the beautiful surroundings of BC’s coastlines.
We’ve experienced the same things you have. We understand what it takes to run a small business because we’ve been there ourselves.
And we want to learn what matters to you. We will open our ears and listen attentively. Even if it takes that second pot of coffee. We will spend the time with you because we want to know every facet of your business. We want to learn your goals, your wildest dreams even, so we can help you achieve them.
At the end of the day, we want you to feel relaxed and peaceful about your finances. There’s no need to stress.
The Ashby Team will save the day! And our aim is to provide top quality accounting solutions and support for small business owners, but in a manner that is easy to understand, worry-free and cost efficient. With years of experience in the Construction, Real Estate and Professional Services sector, such as doctors and lawyers offices, we know that to stand out, excellent customer service has to be our top priority. And we aim to please, in everything that we do.
We know that running a successful business involves more than just a space to rent and a catchy name. It requires organization, attention to detail and a handle on things like bookkeeping, GST, financial statements, and ever-changing tax laws. We can help you with those things. In fact, we live for it! After all, accounting is our superpower and we know how to use it!
Say hello to our founder, Cheryl Ashby!
Cheryl is committed to helping local small businesses. They are near and dear to her heart, and she has helped many business owners by empowering them to take charge of their finances.
She started out with a Business degree from Vancouver Island University. With a focus on marketing, she learned new ways to promote businesses, but she also learned the importance of client relationships.
Though her original plan was to go into teaching, Cheryl taught English overseas as a TESL Certified instructor; then decided to switch directions, to pursue her passion for accounting through the University of British Columbia’s Accounting Diploma Program.
Upon graduating, she started the Certified General Accountant Program and began working for a local Nanaimo Public Practice firm. It was through this experience that Cheryl realized she loved working with the public. She also learned that she could be of great use to them through the combination of her technical knowledge of accounting and business, as well as her teaching skills.“I want to help clients understand their finances. The feeling of really helping someone is why I love to do what I do.”
Through the years, Cheryl gained experience through her work with local and national accounting firms, large and cross border companies, and small businesses experiencing major growth and expansion.
Now, she’s ready to strike out on her own and share that experience with others.
“If I was going to be advising small businesses on how to run their companies, I wanted to have the experience of being an entrepreneur myself, so I could relate to all their challenges and obstacles.”
Now that she has moved back to the island to remain closer to her family, she wants to help local business owners like herself. She wants to take her own experience and use it to help others achieve their dreams.
She also has a wonderful ‘other half’ who keeps her focused. Not to mention, a challenging but loving Rottweiler named Bentley, who she simply adores. She also loves the water and outdoor living, which is why she chose to settle on the island.
Cheryl loves being involved in her community and she looks forward to supporting local businesses wherever she can.
Say Hello to Linda Ashby…
Linda is also an integral part of the team and happens to be part of the family!
As Cheryl’s mother, Linda did more than master the task of raising four girls. She also started a career in finance, later using that experience to assist her husband with his own small business. She oversaw all the daily bookkeeping and knows what it takes to run a successful small business.
Linda’s experience also extends beyond small business. She was a valued employee working in the Provincial Government Finance Department for over 25 years. Along with her enthusiasm for helping people, she brings with her many other skills developed over those years.
One of her pet peeves? “Bad bookkeeping. There are so many repercussions to making mistakes. You might end up with a higher tax bill because the accountant has to fix what was missed by the bookkeeper.”
That’s why Linda is thorough and detail oriented. She wants to ensure this doesn’t happen to you.
She also likes to volunteer and has acted as treasurer for Saint Andrews United Church. Linda also takes pleasure in reading, baking and sewing – a true renaissance woman – she is sociable and highly organized, which is a must not only in her career, but also in her role of matriarch to a large family.
